Safety research in CTA addresses all aspects of the transportation system: highway, vehicle, driver and environment. Staff members are active in traffic records development, the analysis of State and national crash data files, and exposure data such as the Nationwide Household Travel Survey (NHTS) and the Vehicle Inventory and Use Survey (VIUS). Project experience includes occupant protection and collision avoidance issues for both passenger vehicles and heavy trucks. Current projects include development of methods to study crash causation and the assessment of motor carrier safety performance.
